King Q4
A self-proclaimed slacker, Bertrand Groussard nevertheless led one the most singular careers of the French underground, which starts with a sensational tour de force : the recording, with his Atari 1040 and Akai sampler, of one the very first masterpieces of French IDM. Recorded in the trough of the wave between French Touch 1.0 et French Touch 2.0 (that is, when the world wasn’t listening), King Q4’s first eponymous album answered with no hostility whatsoever to British IDM’s virtuosity but with quite remarkable composure, softness and maestria that used François de Roubaix’s childish melodies, African music’s polyrhythm or Steve Reich’s solar ascensions. After a number of concerts, Groussard let King Q4 go to sleep and started playing the drums in others’ projects (Encre, The Konki Duet, Matt Elliot…) and in various bands (Arafight, Section Amour), only reviving it for great new songs on compilations or split singles… And probably finishing, in some secret basement, the most awaited second album in the history of French IDM (that is, if the world is listening).
